Getting to know Tukiya's Closet.

Getting to know Tukiya's Closet.
Tukiya's Closet has recently joined Better Half in store and it is a pleasure to welcome her carefully selected items in the space. We spent some time chatting and learning and would love to share the conversation with you about Tukiya and her mysterious closet!

Better Half: What was the first/most notable item you ever thrifted
Tukiya's Closet: The first most notable item I ever thrifted was a two piece tailored suit that fit me like a glove, it was almost as if the tailor specially had me in mind when making it. I got it 2012 when I first moved to Capetown and it still hangs in my closet in mint condition, I pull it out whenever I need to remind myself (or) others who the f*** I am.

BH: How did you decide to start Tukiya’s Closet? Was it a conscious decision or something you fell into?
TC:
Tukiya’s Closet was both a conscious decision and in a way something I fell into. I’ve had an on and off relationship with trading vintage and I guess this time round I decided to commit. My first ever job was at a vintage store in Obs. I then went on to assist a fashion designer which just made me fall in love with clothing that much more and at some point started a business called Retro Clothing  - I’d trade at different markets in the city and it was mainly a way for me to have extra cash than it was my bread and butter. When I moved to Joburg I kind of parked the business and a year ago I resurrected it as Tukiya’s Closet. It’s solid now and is my main focus.

BH: As a new mom, how do you find you dress sense changed or developed and do you have any advice for other fashion moms?
TC:
My personal style has definitely changed as a mom. Comfort and functionality. That’s what I’m about these days. I don’t really have advice for new moms I’d just say that your pre mommy clothes might not fit you anymore and that’s okay- you gave birth to an entire human being so be kind to yourself and your body. Wear what makes you feel good, whatever that may be.

BH: You’ve been between Joburg and Cape Town. How has this influenced your dress sense and the way you thrift?
I LOVE THRIFTING IN JOBURG! Sheesh! I’ll never get over it. I appreciate the affordability of JHB thrift and it’s an entire adventure. Cape Town has its own flow and once you crack it you’ve also hit the jackpot. Both cities have their pro's and cons. In terms of my dress sense I’m probably more adventurous with my style in Joburg. I mean it’s the nature of the city but my style in CT is relaxed but ultimately I have a dope sense of style.

5. What does it mean to you to be stocking at Better Half?
I appreciate the opportunity to stock at Better Half. It’s been my favorite vintage store from the moment I discovered it. I love how the space is curated and the marriage between past and present is amazing. Stocking at Better Half means Tukiya's Closet is associated with a reputable brand and it pushes me to source better items and to offer better services and pay close attention to the fine details that are so easily overlooked but ultimately make a brand.
