Black Friday Thoughts

Black Friday Thoughts

Black Friday, follows the American holiday, Thanks Giving. It is an American tradition which became popular in the ‘60’s as major brands and stores tried to sell their remaining stock from the aforementioned holiday. It later became popular as more companies and corporations saw this as an opportunity to sell products which they had been struggling to let go of at discounted rates. As usual with sales, this lead to mass consumerism - consumers buying without proper intention, but purely due to seeing reduced prices.

With Black Friday quickly approaching towards the end of this month, we use it as an opportunity to reflect on our choices towards ethical consumption.

The pandemic has left most of us in tricky financial situations and we understand how comforting a sale can be in these times. It’s great opportunity to treat yourself and get that thing that you’ve been eyeing for some time but haven’t quite been able to afford.  If you know what you need, and use the day as a means to acquire it, we support that.  What we don't support is the unconscious spending that transpires due to radically low prices.

As Black Friday tends to be a gentle nudge into the Festive season, which is synonymous with overspending and mass consumption we've complied some questions to ask yourself before making purchases:

Do I need this?

Do I love it?

Will I use/wear this for many years to come?

Do I have something like this already?

Is this financially sustainable?

What is it made of?

Do I support the brand and business behind the product?

As a small business, which is rooted in sustainability, we have taken a stance to stay away from the hysteria so often caused on the day. With preloved pieces as our backbone at better half, we do understand the need for affordability and transparency in the clothing industry however, BF is not inline with our ethos.

By promoting sustainable choices, Better Half supports the circular fashion movement, creating positive change within the clothing industry.  We hope to keep it this way.
